Is balance leasing available yet?  If not, is there a timeframe?

Not that I know of, maybe a feature that comes along with the local wallet.

Any news here? Do I really have to store my wallet password on VPS if I want to forge?

It isnt a priority right now. You dont have to store pass phrase on the VPS to forge. Try asking on slack for the exact steps, as I dont recall the commands.
